Firebase is a 2017 science fiction war horror short set in Vietnam during the war. Sergeant Hines hunts the River God, a burned and nearly unstoppable figure who can bend space, time, and dead bodies. CIA agent Jacob Palmer sends Hines to a secret base, where a badly burned soldier describes an attack that crossed from Vietnam to South Carolina. The short uses old war footage, graphic gore, strange visions, and a cliffhanger to create a bleak and angry mood.
The film shows that the River God began as a Vietnamese farmer whose wife and children died in the war. His grief turns him into a force that harms American and Vietnamese fighters, so the story treats the war as a source of suffering on both sides. The CIA hides the deaths and calls the base nonexistent, while Hines is pushed into a final hunt with special weapons. The main themes are grief, revenge, guilt, faith, and the idea that reality may be a broken computer program.
