The Eyes of My Mother follows Francisca, a quiet girl who grows up on a remote farm with her Portuguese mother and American father. Her mother teaches her about eyes and surgery before a salesman murders her in the family home. Francisca and her father keep the killer in a barn, and the girl grows into a lonely woman who cannot understand ordinary love or grief. The black-and-white film uses very little speech and builds a cold, disturbing mood as she turns her need for family into violence.
The film has one brief same-sex kiss when Francisca brings a woman home from a bar. The meeting ends in murder, so the film does not build a queer relationship or an identity message around it. Francisca later kidnaps a baby and keeps the child’s mother captive while trying to make a new family. The main story stays focused on trauma, isolation, death, and the broken way Francisca tries to care for people.
