A Nice Girl Like You follows Lucy Neal, a smart violinist who lives in New York and plays weddings with her string quartet. Her boyfriend leaves after he says she is too closed off about sex and objects to his porn use. Lucy responds by making a long sex list that sends her through adult shops, porn, strip clubs, and sex classes. The film uses bright rom-com jokes as Lucy meets Grant and tries to rebuild her confidence.
The film makes female sexual openness its main message. Lucy and her friends say that women should be allowed to talk about sex and enjoy it as freely as men. One speech calls sex a tool of oppression when men use it against women, and another calls Lucy a supremely empowered woman. The story ends with a straight romance, so the message is modern sex-positive empowerment rather than a broad political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for A Nice Girl Like You.
Woke representation / casting
Lucy Hale plays the central lead as white, although the source memoir writer is half-Taiwanese and half-Latina. Common Sense Media specifically calls this a whitewashed version of the source lead. The supporting group includes a Latina woman and a South Asian man, but the movie does not present that group as a diversity message. The main audience-visible identity issue is the white lead replacing the source writer’s mixed background.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Lucy’s friends say that men can use sex as a tool of oppression. The film says women should be able to discuss sex and enjoy it as freely as men. A sex class calls Lucy a supremely empowered woman and treats sexual confidence as a goal. These lines recur around the list and classes, but the movie does not become a political debate.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
The story centers on Lucy rejecting the idea that a nice woman should be shy or ashamed about sex. Lucy makes porn, sex shops, strip clubs, and sex classes part of her self-improvement plan. The film presents female sexual choice and open talk about pleasure as personal empowerment. The ending returns her to a straight one-partner romance, so the theme stays inside a conventional romantic comedy.
60%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film treats the idea that women should be less sexual than men as old-fashioned. Lucy’s friends frame male pressure and porn use as part of a gender power problem. The comedy also mocks male entitlement and makes female sexual control look healthier. The story does not attack churches, families, capitalism, or other Western institutions.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
The film turns a memoir by a half-Taiwanese and half-Latina writer into a story led by a white character played by Lucy Hale. That is a central identity change because the movie uses the writer’s own sex research as its starting point. The adaptation also changes the book’s porn focus into a safer straight romance, but that is a plot and tone change rather than an identity change. No other established character swap is clearly reported.
38%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small Reddit thread called the film a Hollywood liberal-feminist message that normalizes porn. The poster objected that women were being pushed to sexualize themselves to get a man. The thread was fringe and did not produce a wider boycott or news campaign. Asexual viewers also criticized the film for treating low sexual interest as a problem, but that was a different kind of complaint.
10%
Creator track record context
The available director and producer profiles show little public activism or identity-focused work. Andrea Marcellus also has a low score and a public focus on health and self-improvement. Ayn Carrillo Gailey has a higher score because her work includes bicultural identity and cultural-difference themes. Lucy Hale and Jackie Cruz gave this film clear sex-positive and empowerment framing, but that is title-specific context rather than a broad creator record.
