Miles Hill is a teenage motocross racer who lives in a small desert town with his father, Chuck. A rival leaves him stranded in the desert, where he finds A-X-L, a damaged robot dog made for military work. A-X-L bonds to Miles and begins to protect him with dangerous weapons and great force. The movie mixes a teen adventure, a small romance, and chase scenes as armed men hunt the dog.
Miles asks Sara, the girl he likes, to help hide and repair A-X-L. Sara is shown as a helpful friend and partner, while Miles remains the main driver of the rescue. The villain wants to take back the weapon and study the bond that formed with Miles. The story cares most about friendship, loyalty, and the danger of treating a thinking weapon like property.
