Airlift follows Ranjit Katyal, a rich Indian businessman living comfortably in Kuwait in 1990. When Iraq invades, he tries to save his wife and daughter before he sees thousands of Indian workers trapped without a safe way home. Ranjit slowly gives up his selfish plan and becomes the public face of a huge rescue effort. The movie mixes tense war danger with family drama, business deals, and proud patriotic feeling.
The story makes Ranjit’s change from a man focused on money to a responsible Indian the main emotional journey. It shows frightened families, arguments in a crowded refugee camp, dangerous meetings with Iraqi officers, and long talks with Indian officials. Amrita begins as a worried wife who dislikes the risk, but she later supports Ranjit and speaks up when other refugees blame him. The movie stresses that Indians from different religions and social classes can stand together, while it presents India as a country that can protect its people.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Airlift.

Woke political dialogue
Not present. The movie uses patriotic lines about India and staying united. The lines support national pride and rescue, not modern identity, DEI, or activist politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The core story follows a war evacuation and a rich man’s change from selfishness to responsibility. The message centers on national duty and helping civilians, not modern identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The movie shows slow Indian officials and brutal Iraqi soldiers during a 1990 invasion. It does not turn those events into a modern critique of Western culture, family life, religion, or gender roles.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie combines several real businessmen into Ranjit Katyal and simplifies the evacuation. These are plot changes, not race, gender, sexuality, or other identity changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reported criticism focused on historical accuracy and the role of Indian officials. X evidence shows right-leaning praise for Airlift as patriotic and not woke, which is approval rather than backlash.

Creator track record context
Menon and Dasgupta have no strong activist record. Nair and Shah have made other films about gender, abuse, and social justice. Nikkhil Advani and Monisha Advani have backed stories about gender, caste, and people left out by society. Bhushan Kumar’s work is mainly commercial and patriotic. Airlift itself does not carry these interests into a modern identity campaign.
