Tris, Four, and their friends leave walled post-apocalyptic Chicago and find the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. That advanced compound has been running the city as a genetic experiment. Earlier attempts to fix people through gene editing led to the Purity Wars, and the Bureau now sorts people as pure or damaged. Tris is treated as pure, and Bureau head David courts her while planning control of Chicago, including memory-erasure gas. The moral turn is that pure-versus-damaged ranking is no better than the old faction system, and that no one is more worthy of rescue than anyone else.
The ensemble has several prominent non-white supporting players and multiple women in power, which reads as a familiar young adult franchise pattern rather than a hard diversity campaign. Talk on screen centers on pure versus damaged genetics, factions, trust, and refusing to rank human worth by innate labels. That message is clear, but it is not modern race, gender, or sexuality activist jargon. The third-act story is a hereditary genetic caste, bias against the damaged, and an equality-of-worth stand against eugenic ranking inside classic sci-fi anti-tyranny dystopia. It targets a fictional experimental government and power abuse, not Christianity, traditional family, or core Western institutions as activist targets.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Allegiant.
Woke representation / casting
Future Chicago has several prominent non-white supporting players and multiple women in power. That matches a common young adult franchise diversity and female-leadership pattern. It is not framed as a first-of-its-kind diversity statement. Leads Tris and Four and chief antagonist David remain white, and there is no queer casting signal on screen.
26%
Woke political dialogue
On-screen talk centers on pure versus damaged genetics, factions, trust, and whether Bureau control equals the old hierarchy. There is clear talk that people should not be ranked by innate labels. That divide is treated as no better than factions. The film does not use modern race, gender, or sexuality activist jargon.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
The core third-act premise is a hereditary pure-or-damaged genetic caste and bias against the damaged. It delivers an equality-of-worth message against eugenic ranking. That is clear to the audience and coded as discrimination. It still stays inside classic sci-fi anti-eugenics dystopia rather than explicit modern race, gender, sexuality, or colonial identity politics.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film targets a fictional experimental government, eugenics bureaucracy, and power abuse. It does not attack Christianity, traditional family, toxic masculinity, or core Western cultural institutions as activist targets. Some Christian-oriented reviews even read the all-are-damaged beat as broadly moral rather than anti-Western.
8%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Book-to-film changes are commercial and adaptation choices, not identity or DEI rewrites of characters or history.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful anti-woke or anti-DEI backlash campaign attached to this title. Criticism was about quality, CGI, split-book cynicism, and box-office flop.
0%
Creator track record context
Key creative context is mostly low to moderate, with Roth and some casting directors higher than the rest. The film’s public identity is commercial young adult genre work. It is not an activist-auteur project.
