Death-row inmate Callum Lynch is taken by Abstergo, a modern front for the Templar Order. He is forced into the Animus so scientists can mine the genetic memories of his 15th-century Spanish Assassin ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha. In 1492 Spain, Aguilar and partner María fight Inquisition-linked Templars for the Apple of Eden, an artifact that can erase free will. As Cal absorbs Aguilar’s skills and learns about the long Assassin–Templar war, he must choose whether to help the Templars “cure” violence through total control or reclaim his heritage and stop them. The film is a freestanding game-universe story about free will versus authoritarian order.
The story does not push modern identity politics. Multiethnic modern Assassin captives and a female co-Assassin appear as descendants from different historical Assassins, not as a diversity showcase. Dialogue centers free will, the Assassin creed, violence as a hereditary impulse, and corporate Templar control, with no race, gender, or activist speech. The Spanish Inquisition and Templar power are historical villains inside the franchise’s tyranny-versus-freedom frame. Race, gender ideology, and representation messaging are not story drivers.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Assassin's Creed.
Woke representation / casting
The film shows multiethnic modern Assassin captives and a female co-Assassin plus a female lead scientist. Casting largely follows franchise logic of descendants from different historical Assassins and is not sold as a diversity showcase. The leads remain Fassbender’s white male dual role.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Dialogue centers free will, the Assassin creed, violence as a hereditary impulse, and corporate Templar control. There is no identity, race, gender, or DEI-style activist speech.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The plot is genetic memory, parkour-action history, and a philosophical fight over free will versus forced peace. Race, gender ideology, queer identity, and representation messaging are not story drivers.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Spanish Inquisition, Torquemada, and Templar power are the historical villains. Some Christian reviewers read this as an anti-Catholic or anti-organized-religion undercurrent. It stays inside the franchise’s long-running tyranny-versus-freedom frame rather than modern activist attacks on whiteness, patriarchy, or Western social norms.
10%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Callum and Aguilar are original film characters. Multi-ancestry supporting roles track existing game-line Assassins. There are no race or gender swaps of established icons for identity signaling.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reception focused on weak storytelling, pacing, and a failed game-to-film translation. There was no notable anti-woke or DEI campaign against this 2016 movie. Later franchise controversy is unrelated.
0%
Creator track record context
Kurzel sits moderate for interest in violence, social decay, and later far-right extremism material, while other key names are low or near zero. Interviews for this film stressed craft, free will, and genetic memory. They did not push identity or DEI messaging.
