Johnny Faust is a young singer from Ohio who leaves college and moves to Los Angeles with his band, The Relentless. The group wants fame, but money problems, Johnny’s mother’s cancer, drugs, sex, and rivalries pull the members apart. A strange man offers success if the band makes a deadly sacrifice, and the band accepts a deal with the Devil. The movie mixes hard rock, dark humor, horror, and a warning about the price of fame.
Several parts of the story show modern sexual freedom and queer content through Lily, the band’s female bassist, who is bisexual and has sex with women and men. Several women openly choose sexual relationships, while the men often chase, use, or fail to control those relationships. These moments return during the band’s rise, but they remain side stories beside Johnny’s fame, addiction, guilt, and fight with the Devil. The main message is about temptation, selfish choices, and the cost of celebrity, not a political campaign about identity.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for American Satan.
Woke representation / casting
The band adds Lily as its female bassist after the men debate whether to let a woman join. Lily is bisexual and has sex with women and men during the film. The other main band members are mostly male, and the film does not present the group as a diversity project.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers music, fame, sex, drugs, family, and the Devil. It does not push modern identity, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Lily has a bisexual identity and has relationships with women and men. Several women in the story act on their sexual wants instead of waiting for men to lead them. These scenes return during the band’s rise, but Johnny’s fame, drug use, guilt, and struggle with the Devil remain the main story.
30%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Christian protesters object to the band’s Satanic image before a concert. The band and its managers treat the public outcry as free advertising, which makes the protest look foolish and useful to the record business. The movie does not build a wider attack on Christianity, capitalism, or Western institutions.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie follows an original fictional band and does not change an established character, source story, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear anti-woke or right-leaning complaints about the film were found. X had no anti-woke reaction, and other viewer comments mostly discuss acting, plot holes, music, and Satanic imagery.
0%
Creator track record context
Most key creators have ordinary entertainment careers with little public activist work. Ash Avildsen has shown some interest in overlooked women, but his career is not built around identity politics. Isen Robbins and Aimee Schoof have worked on some films about black and queer history, which adds mild context.
