Stephanie Smothers is a full-time mother, true crime writer, and part-time crime solver. Her former friend Emily Nelson has left prison and asks Stephanie to be maid of honor at her rich Italian wedding on Capri. The trip changes when Emily's ex-husband dies and the wedding guests hide links to a Mafia family. Stephanie investigates while Emily, her family, and the guests keep changing their stories. The tone is glossy, rude, violent, and very silly, with dark jokes mixed into the murder mystery.
Two women control the main story, and Stephanie's crime skills and Emily's bold plans drive nearly every major turn. The film also shows Dante hiding his relationship with Matteo and using his marriage to Emily as a public cover, while Stephanie has a gay male friend named Darren. The story treats the Mafia's macho rules and pressure to look straight as harmful, but it uses those ideas inside a wild crime plot instead of a political speech. The main themes are friendship, betrayal, family damage, revenge, and the danger of trusting charming people.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Another Simple Favor.
Woke representation / casting
Two women hold the lead roles, and the film repeatedly puts their choices at the center of the action. The cast also includes a gay Italian groom, a mixed-race ex-husband, black supporting characters, and a gay male friend. Interviews present the sequel as a women-led franchise, and Feig says he likes stories about complex women. The film does not sell the cast as a diversity campaign, so the representation signal is noticeable but limited.
25%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters joke about prison, the legal system, crime, and Mafia power. They do not deliver a recurring activist speech about politics, DEI, or modern social policy.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Dante is gay and keeps his relationship with Matteo hidden behind his planned marriage to Emily. Emily says the fake marriage protects Dante and helps keep peace between rival Mafia families. The pressure to appear straight returns through the wedding and the family conflict, so the theme affects the main mystery. The film uses this identity plot mostly as a crime twist and cover story, not as a broad activist message.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film presents the Mafia families as violent systems ruled by money, fear, and macho behavior. Dante hides his male partner because his family expects a straight public marriage, and the women must also survive the family's power games. Stephanie says she can write her own ending instead of accepting the fate usually given to women in crime stories. These ideas recur in the wedding plot, but the film does not make a wide attack on Western institutions.
26%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This sequel follows the 2018 film and uses an original story. Its new triplet, Mafia, and relationship twists change the plot, but they are not identity-driven changes to an established character or real event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No sustained anti-woke complaint about the film was found in the supplied X research or in the wider coverage checked. Online attacks and review-bombing talk centered on the Baldoni and Lively dispute, plot quality, or fashion, not woke themes.

Creator track record context
Paul Feig's cached score is 61/100, and his work often centers on women in leading roles. Jessica Sharzer's cached score is 56/100, and her work includes queer and social-identity stories. Laeta Kalogridis has a cached score of 41/100, and Laura Fischer has a cached score of 58/100 because of diversity and LGBTQ support. This background matches the film's women-led focus and queer subplot, but the title itself is mainly a dark mystery comedy.
