Riya Ortiz wakes up on the distant planet Ash and finds the members of her research crew dead. She cannot remember what happened, and she does not know if Brion, a man who comes to rescue her, is telling the truth. The pair must repair their station, manage their failing oxygen, and escape before a deadly alien force reaches them. The movie has a dark, bloody, and dreamlike tone, with bright colors, sudden violence, and a mystery that unfolds through broken memories.
The movie places a woman played by Mexican actor Eiza González at the center of the space survival story and gives her the main fights and hard choices. The research crew includes Indonesian actor Iko Uwais, Samoan actor Beulah Koale, black filmmaker Flying Lotus, and white actors in named roles. This creates a mild representation signal, but the story keeps its attention on memory, trust, human survival, and alien life. Riya’s struggle stays personal and physical as she recovers her memory, judges Brion, and fights to escape.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ash.
Woke representation / casting
Riya is played by Mexican actor Eiza González and holds the central astronaut and survivor role. The small crew also includes Indonesian actor Iko Uwais, Samoan actor Beulah Koale, Black director Flying Lotus, and white actors. This gives the film a clearly mixed group in several visible roles. The future setting makes the mix plausible, and the movie does not make diversity a subject, so the signal remains limited.
28%
Woke political dialogue
The film says that Earth can no longer support human life and sends the crew to search for a new home. This is a brief environmental warning in the setup. The story does not discuss climate policy, capitalism, or activist politics, so the political signal is weak.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The film uses memory loss, trust, survival, and alien contact as its main themes. It does not build the story around race, gender, sexuality, or modern identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film does not target Western institutions, religion, family life, traditional gender roles, or capitalism. The damaged Earth is a science-fiction setting detail, not a repeated critique of society.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Ash is an original screenplay with no older character, canon, or real historical figure to change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke complaints, boycotts, or review-bombing. Other public posts mainly discuss the plot, visuals, gore, soundtrack, and quality.
0%
Creator track record context
Flying Lotus has a moderate past record tied to unconventional black representation and public opposition to Trump-era politics. Jonni Remmler has no well-documented activist record, and most other key creatives have low or mild cached scores. Interviews about Ash focus on horror, memory, video games, music, isolation, and survival, not identity politics. This gives the title mild creator track record context.
