Michael Sullivan leaves a comfortable job to work for the United Nations in 2002. He joins the Oil-for-Food program in Iraq and soon learns that money meant for food and medicine is being stolen. His boss, Pasha, says that dirty deals keep the program alive, while Michael tries to learn how much truth he can bear. The film has a serious, talk-heavy thriller tone with murder, danger, and a slow loss of trust.
The film shows corruption inside the United Nations, Iraqi politics, foreign governments, banks, and aid companies. It asks whether a broken system can still help people when the people running it take bribes. Michael's romance with Nashim, a Kurdish worker in Baghdad, adds a personal link to the Kurdish struggle and the harm done to Iraqi civilians. The story centers on moral compromise, the cost of telling the truth, and the damage caused when powerful groups put survival and influence above honesty.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Backstabbing for Beginners.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses an international United Nations setting, a Kurdish worker in Baghdad, and female UN officials. The story treats those choices as parts of its plot and setting, not as a representation message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film's spoken politics concern sanctions, aid, bribes, Iraq, and UN diplomacy. The lines do not promote modern identity, gender-role, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The movie includes Nashim's Kurdish cause and the suffering of Iraqi civilians. Those points belong to the Iraq story and do not become a modern identity-politics message.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film places the United Nations, Western powers, banks, and aid companies inside a story about stolen money and harm to Iraqi civilians. The story also presents sanctions and foreign policy as part of the damage. The criticism returns throughout Michael's investigation and shapes his final choice. The message is a mild foreign-policy and institution critique, not a broad attack on religion, family, gender roles, or Western culture.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes real people into fictional names and adds romance and thriller events. Those changes are plot inventions, not identity swaps.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The searched audience comments centered on slow pacing, confusion, and factual liberties. The X pass found no anti-woke backlash, and no clear anti-woke complaints appeared elsewhere.

Creator track record context
Per Fly often makes stories about class, power, and broken institutions. Daniel Pyne and Michael Soussan mainly work with crime, politics, diplomacy, and corruption, with little public identity activism. Theo James has supported refugees and UNHCR, but that work is humanitarian rather than a title campaign. A few producers have diversity-focused credits, so the combined context is mild.
