Below Zero follows Martín, a police officer who drives a prison van through a cold, empty stretch of Spain at night. Attackers stop the van and try to take one prisoner, while the men inside fight to escape or seize control. Martín must survive the freezing weather, the prisoners, and the armed threat outside. The tense crime thriller turns into a harsh moral fight about revenge, law, and justice.
The clearest identity-linked theme is violence against women, because the attack is tied to the rape and murder of a teenage girl. The film briefly challenges old gender rules when a male officer says his earring does not make him less of a police officer. The story also shows prisons and police systems failing people, but it does not build a broad campaign about race or sexual identity. The main drama stays focused on revenge, legal duty, and survival.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Below Zero.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is almost entirely male and centers on police officers and prisoners in Spain. The varied prisoner backgrounds fit a Spanish prison story, and the film does not frame the casting as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Montesinos mocks a male officer's earring and says the sergeant will dislike it. The officer says that wearing an earring does not make him less of a police officer and says his union supports him. This is one brief challenge to old ideas about how a police officer should look.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
Gender-based violence drives the main conflict, because Miguel hunts Nano after Nano raped and killed his teenage daughter. The film makes Martín choose between following the law and helping a father recover the girl's body. The story also gives Rei a revenge motive linked to an attack on his sister. The film treats these events as a harsh moral question, not as a broad campaign about modern identity politics.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Martín as a rule-following officer who must decide whether the law is enough. The prison system is shown as a place society ignores, and a corrupt politician appears among the prisoners. The story also shows people whose problems were not solved by the law. These ideas make the film mildly critical of police, prison, and legal institutions, but it does not target capitalism, Christianity, conservatives, or family life.
33%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original Spanish thriller. It does not change a known character, source story, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public discussion centers on the film's violence, ending, tension, and story quality. No sustained complaint that the film pushes woke, DEI, identity, or activist politics was found, and the supplied X research reports none.
0%
Creator track record context
The director's wider work includes a short about climate change and other genre stories with social concerns. The writer is mainly known for genre films and has no strong public pattern of identity-politics advocacy. The producers have backed stories about disability, immigration, inequality, and gender, but their careers also cover many commercial projects. The director's interviews frame this film around gender violence, justice, and prison problems.
