Burning follows Jong-su, a young delivery worker and aspiring writer who lives on his father’s farm near Paju, South Korea. He meets Hae-mi, a woman from his childhood, and grows close to her before she travels to Africa. When she returns with Ben, a rich and calm man from Seoul, Jong-su feels pushed aside and starts watching Ben. Hae-mi then vanishes, and the quiet romance turns into a tense mystery about jealousy, anger, and what can be trusted.
The film shows a sharp gap between Jong-su’s poor rural life and Ben’s clean, rich city life. The story links that gap to job worries, empty dreams, and the anger of young people who feel stuck. Hae-mi searches for meaning, but the men around her often treat her as a prize, a mystery, or a problem to solve. Jong-su’s jealousy grows after Hae-mi dances half-naked at the farm and leads him toward shocking violence. The story keeps the facts uncertain while it explores wealth, loneliness, male control, and rage.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Burning.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast fits a South Korean story about Korean characters. Steven Yeun plays Ben as a Korean man who has lived abroad, and the film uses no identity-first casting message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
A woman at the crop festival says women are judged whether they wear makeup, do not wear makeup, show skin, or dress simply. She ends by saying there is no country for women. The scene is brief, but it directly voices a modern gender-role complaint. Other political speech about youth unemployment, Trump, and North Korea works as background rather than woke dialogue.
27%
Identity-driven story themes
The film repeatedly shows Hae-mi as a woman whose debt, loneliness, sex, and search for meaning leave her exposed. Jong-su and Ben often treat her as a prize or a mystery instead of listening to her. Jong-su calls her a whore after her half-naked dance, and his jealousy grows into violence after she disappears. Hae-mi’s story is central to the mystery, but the film keeps her inner life partly hidden and leaves the final meaning open.
41%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly contrasts insecure work and a poor farm with Ben’s rich city life. The story connects that gap to youth unemployment, class anger, and the feeling that wealthy people can ignore ordinary rules. It also shows harmful male pride in Jong-su, Ben, and Jong-su’s father. The criticism targets South Korean class life and male power more than Western institutions, so it is present but not dominant.
36%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts Murakami’s story but changes the setting and expands the mystery without a clear race, gender, sexuality, or hero-role change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke posts or complaints. Reviewed Reddit, Letterboxd, and news discussion centered on class, masculinity, ambiguity, and the ending, not claims that the film pushes DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Lee Chang-dong has a repeated record of stories about inequality, alienation, and institutions that fail ordinary people. Haruki Murakami often writes about loneliness, trauma, hard government rule, and vulnerable people, but he is not known for a DEI-focused public persona. Oh Jung-mi has little public activist history, while producer Lee Joon-dong has backed independent films about people facing abuse and social exclusion. The wider producer group is mostly business-focused, so the combined context is socially critical but not strongly identity-driven.
