Eight-year-old Peter lives with Carol and Mark in a quiet American town during the week before Halloween. He hears steady tapping from inside his bedroom wall, but his parents say the house is making the sound. Peter also faces bullying at school and finds little comfort at home. The film starts as a tense haunted-house story and ends as a bloody monster story.
Peter is pushed into violent action when the voice tells him that his parents hid Sarah because she was born with a frightening body. The story then turns the trapped child into a dangerous monster who has used Peter for revenge. Miss Devine notices that Peter is in danger and tries to help, while the parents use fear and control to keep their secret. The film's lasting ideas concern abuse, bullying, family secrecy, guilt, and the risk of trusting a hidden voice.
