Crypto follows Martin Duran, a bank worker who checks for money laundering in New York. After he stops a large business deal, his bosses send him back to his small hometown in upstate New York. Martin finds his father’s potato farm in trouble and struggles to repair his bond with his father and brother. His work soon links a local art gallery, hidden digital money, and a Russian crime group. The film uses a dark, tense crime-thriller tone.
Martin works with his old friend Earl, who mines digital coins, while he follows clues through the bank and the gallery. The story treats large banks, Wall Street deals, gentrification, drugs, and new technology as parts of a town losing its old way of life. The criminals use hidden accounts and Russian mob connections to threaten Martin’s family. The main focus stays on fraud, family loyalty, danger, and the clash between old farm life and new money.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Crypto.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The lead group is mostly white and male, with women serving as a bank chief, an FBI agent, and a gallery operator. Those roles fit a modern New York crime story, and the film does not call attention to their identities or sell a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with bank rules, fraud, crypto, gentrification, and family trouble. A crude joke links Martin’s skills to autism, but the film does not use it to promote a modern identity or activist idea.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story is about money laundering, family strain, farming, crime, and new technology. Martin’s conflict is personal and financial, not a fight over race, sex, sexuality, or representation.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a corrupt bank, a failing farm, gentrification, opioid abuse, and violent crime. These problems create the thriller’s danger, but the story does not attack Western culture, Christianity, family life, or traditional gender roles.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Crypto is an original crime story with fictional characters. It does not adapt a known franchise or change a real person.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X pass found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints. Other public comments focused on the slow plot, weak writing, trailer, acting, and crypto accuracy, not woke or DEI content.

Creator track record context
John Stalberg Jr. and the three writers have very low cached scores and no known activist record. Most producers also have low scores and commercial thriller backgrounds. A few producers have credits tied to a queer-centered film, female-driven stories, or environmental and peace work. The casting directors have mild diversity and women-in-film links. These signals do not appear in Crypto’s story or marketing.
