The movie follows The Cook, a careful cartel worker played by Nicolas Cage. The Boss sends him and The Executioner to find out why cocaine shipments lose value before they reach Canada. Their search moves from coca fields in Colombia through Mexico and the United States to a Canadian nightclub. A DEA agent called The Agent in Charge follows the same shipment because her sister died from an overdose. The tone is cold, violent, and bleak, with the story showing a drug business built on greed, fear, and betrayal.
The clearest political point comes when The Agent in Charge says that the government spends money but people can still get drugs. The DEA's failure gives the film a mild critique of the war on drugs. The film also gives a woman the top role in the federal case, but it does not frame her gender as a special cause. These points stay secondary to the crime plot. The story spends far more time on addiction, corruption, violence, and the harm caused by the cocaine trade.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Running with the Devil.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast includes a white woman as the Agent in Charge, a black man as The Man, and Colombian and Latino characters in the drug trade. These choices fit the modern settings, and the film does not present them as a diversity or empowerment message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue is mostly about cocaine, threats, money, and orders. The ending questions whether the war on drugs works, but it does not use identity, DEI, gender, or activist language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story centers on a cocaine shipment, addiction, greed, betrayal, and violent cartel work. The Agent in Charge has a personal reason to stop the trade, but the film does not turn her story into a gender, race, sexuality, or representation message.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie shows the DEA following a cocaine shipment but failing to stop the supply. The Agent in Charge says the government spends money while drugs remain easy to get. The ending gives a brief critique of the war on drugs. The film does not attack family, Christianity, traditional gender roles, or Western culture more broadly.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original crime story. It does not adapt a known character, book, real person, or historical event in a way that changes identity or leadership.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear complaint that the film pushes woke, DEI, identity-politics, or left-wing content was found in the reviewed coverage. The supplied X pass found no reaction, and web audience comments mainly discussed plot quality, realism, and the ending.
0%
Creator track record context
Jason Cabell's relevant public profile is mainly Navy SEAL service and action filmmaking. His title interview connects the film to DEA field experience and says the war on drugs is futile. Cached context finds no sustained activism or DEI advocacy for him or the other listed creators. The team therefore adds only a weak creator track record signal.
