Eddie Garrick is an Atlanta social worker who lost his faith in Christmas after a mall Santa tricked him during his parents’ breakup. On Christmas Eve, Eddie takes his young daughter Charlotte with him while he works because her mother is shopping and the parents are separated. Eddie meets Nick, a man in a red suit who says he is the real Santa, and the group runs from people working for a dishonest politician. The film is a bright but messy family comedy about magic, fear, healing, and bringing a family back together.
The film makes Nick a Black Santa and says that Santa was always Black but history books changed the story. The movie also shows Santas from different backgrounds and puts a black family at the center of the adventure. Those choices make representation a clear part of the film, but the main plot follows Eddie’s childhood pain, his work helping people in crisis, and his wish to reunite with his wife. The story also supports therapy, kindness toward people at a homeless shelter, and a fight against a corrupt politician without turning these ideas into a long political debate.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dashing Through the Snow.
Woke representation / casting
The movie has a mainly black cast in Atlanta, where that setting makes the family and community believable. The stronger representation choice is Nick, a Black Santa, in the main magical role. Actor and producer interviews around the film call this meaningful representation for black children. The signal is clear, but the movie does not build every major role around identity.
40%
Woke political dialogue
Eddie says he prefers Juneteenth and the Fourth of July to Christmas. Charlotte says Santa was always black and that history books changed the story. Nick jokes that he took Mrs. Claus’s last name and calls their home progressive. These are clear identity or social messages, but they are brief jokes rather than the main conflict.
20%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes a Black Santa part of its central Christmas world. Charlotte says Santa was always black and that history books changed the story. The wider Santa lore includes people from different backgrounds, linking the fantasy to representation. Eddie’s main arc remains healing from childhood pain, finding belief, and repairing his family, so identity is important but not the whole message.
40%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The politician’s bribery and plan to replace a homeless shelter with a tire store are a simple family-film villain plot. The movie does not turn that conflict into a wider attack on Western culture, capitalism, men, faith, or traditional family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes the familiar Santa image by making Nick a black man. Charlotte says Santa was always black and that history books changed the story. The movie also says Santas can come from different backgrounds, making the change part of its world building. This is a clear identity-driven update to a well-known character, but it supports a family adventure instead of taking over the whole plot.
50%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A conservative Movieguide review calls the Black Santa history line a politically correct moment. One Reddit trailer comment asks why Santa is black, which shows a small identity-based complaint. Most audience and critic comments discuss the film’s weak writing or silly tone, so documented anti-woke backlash is limited.
15%
Creator track record context
Will Packer has a representation-first public profile and often says representation matters. Tim Story and Scott Rosenberg have mostly mainstream records with little clear activist framing in this title context. The other credited producers and casting director also have low or minimal activist signals. Packer’s background supports the film’s Black Santa focus, but the wider creative team does not show a strong activist pattern.
