Ten-year-old Amber Wyatt is still angry and sad after her mother dies. She fills her sketchbook with frightening monsters and violent pictures of classmates. When the book falls into a strange pond, its drawings become real and attack the town. Amber, her brother Jack, their classmate Bowman, their father Taylor, and Aunt Liz face the creatures in a funny but sometimes scary family adventure. Amber shows grief through art, while Jack and Bowman help her face the creatures. Taylor has hidden reminders of his wife and avoids talking about the loss, so his children and sister push him to share his feelings. The family learns that sadness can remain even after people help each other. The main message is that children can express hard feelings safely and parents should listen, while the story keeps its focus on family love and healing.
