Dear Zindagi follows Kaira, a young cinematographer who moves between busy Mumbai and her family home in Goa. She is good at her work, but she cannot sleep and keeps pulling away from people she dates. Old pain from being sent away by her parents leaves her afraid of being left again. The movie uses music, jokes, bright places, and long talks to tell a warm but emotional story about growing up.
Therapy becomes the main path through Kaira's pain, and Dr. Jehangir helps her face childhood hurt instead of hiding it. The movie says that a woman can live alone, date more than one person, delay marriage, and choose creative work without being treated as damaged or cheap. Kaira also supports a gay friend who is trying to understand and accept his identity. These ideas are important to the plot, but the movie presents them through one person's healing, family conflict, and relationships rather than through party politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dear Zindagi.
Woke representation / casting
The film centers Kaira as a skilled woman working in cinematography, which it presents as a male-dominated field. The film also gives Kaira a brief gay friend who speaks about his identity. These choices add visible gender and sexuality representation, but the main cast still fits the Indian setting. The story does not build its cast around a large mix of identity groups.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Kaira questions why a woman needs marriage to have a home. Kaira also rejects shame over having more than one relationship and speaks against judging women as cheap or fast. Kaira's gay friend says he uses therapy to understand himself, and she pushes back on jokes about gay people in the film industry. These ideas appear in several family, work, and relationship scenes, but the movie has no party politics or long activist speech.
45%
Identity-driven story themes
Kaira's recovery depends on accepting her feelings and choosing a life that fits her. The movie treats therapy and self-care as valid for a capable young woman, not as proof that she is broken. Kaira's freedom to live alone, date, avoid rushing into marriage, and follow creative work is praised through the ending. A short subplot supports a gay friend's effort to accept his identity, but the main story stays with Kaira's healing.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie shows Kaira being pushed out of her home because she is unmarried and calls that treatment unfair. Kaira's relatives treat marriage as more respectable than her creative work and worry that good men will disappear. Kaira's parents favor her brother and fail to understand how their choices shaped her pain. The movie critiques traditional family and relationship norms, but it does not turn that critique into a broad attack on Western institutions, Christianity, capitalism, or conservative politics.
40%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story with no established canon to rewrite. It does not change a known character, source story, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account called the film “performative-woke-slop” while still crediting it for helping Indian viewers discuss mental health. The supplied X pass found no coordinated boycott, review-bombing, or anti-DEI campaign. Broader reviews and audience posts focused on therapy, dialogue, and the glossy lifestyle rather than identity politics. The complaint stayed fringe and did not become a public controversy.
7%
Creator track record context
Gauri Shinde's stored profile shows a repeated focus on women's inner lives, dignity, independence, and emotional support. Karan Johar's stored profile includes support for LGBTQIA+ inclusion, gender politics, and changing family structures. Gauri Khan, Pravin Khairnar, and Nandini Shrikent have lower or less activist profiles in the stored summaries. This gives the creative team a medium-high track record context score, while the movie itself remains a personal therapy drama.
