Kat is a struggling American improv teacher living in London, and she worries that her chance to become a successful actor has passed. A detective hires her for a small undercover police job because improv actors can invent answers and stay in character. Kat brings her shy office worker student Hugh and her intense, unemployed actor student Marlon. The trio enters a drug gang by pretending to be dangerous criminals, and their fake roles keep creating real danger. The film mixes fast jokes, crime violence, awkward people, and a light action tone.

The story gives Kat the main problem-solving role, while the two men often supply the nervous or foolish comedy. Her leadership grows from her work as a teacher and from her quick reading of dangerous people. The three characters begin as lonely people who feel stuck, and the criminal job gives them confidence and a sense of friendship. The film mainly celebrates improv, teamwork, quick thinking, and second chances. It also treats corrupt police and gang bosses as dangers in a crime story, while the trio's success comes from staying committed to their fake roles.
