Sophie Birenbaum is a quiet high school student who loves theater and hopes to win a small part in her school’s musical. She unexpectedly gets the lead in a school version of Waitress after her mother’s cancer returns. Sophie must learn the songs, handle a new crush, repair a strained friendship, and decide how to spend time with her mother. The movie mixes gentle jokes, teen nerves, family warmth, and sad scenes about illness and loss.
The film gives a lot of space to Sophie, her mother, her grandmother, her female drama teacher, and the women in Waitress. Sophie’s friend Carolyn has a small queer self-discovery story that adds an identity theme to the friendship plot. The movie repeats jokes about women’s rights and says that women may need to take care of themselves without a husband. These points are visible but remain secondary to the mother-daughter story, the school show, and the pain of facing a parent’s death.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Don't Say Good Luck.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The story takes place in a present-day high school and family setting. The female lead, female teacher, and mixed student cast fit that setting, and no clear identity-first casting choice is reported.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film repeats the phrase “women’s rights” in family jokes about driving and marriage. Elizabeth jokes that Ted does not believe in women’s rights. Sophie and Elizabeth use the phrase again when they say women may need to care for themselves without a husband. The words are clear, but they are short jokes rather than a political speech.

Identity-driven story themes
The main story follows a teenage girl whose dream, family duty, and choices drive the plot. Her mother, grandmother, teacher, and female friends carry much of the emotional story. Sophie’s friend Carolyn has a queer self-discovery thread that affects their friendship. The Waitress songs add a woman-centered story about pregnancy, a bad man, and finding strength, but the movie remains mainly about grief, family, and theater.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film’s school version of Waitress includes a woman facing a bad relationship and pregnancy. It contains repeated jokes about women caring for themselves without a husband. The story does not attack schools, churches, capitalism, or Western culture. It presents the gender material as personal drama and humor, so the critique stays brief.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about a school production. The shortened school version of Waitress removes adult plot material, but no identity change to an established character or historical figure is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Audience posts and reviews are mostly emotional or positive, with some complaints about tone and nepotism. No reviewed source makes an anti-woke, DEI, or left-wing complaint about the film.

Creator track record context
Hart’s public work often centers women and underrepresented views. Hankin’s work often explores gender, female ambition, and power. Horowitz has a queer family drama among his past credits. Other producers have mostly low or mixed public profiles, so the full team gives moderate context rather than a strong activist signal.
