Kit Gordy is a troubled teenager whose anger and school trouble send her to Blackwood, a private boarding school hidden in a dark old mansion. Headmistress Madame Duret accepts only five girls and promises to bring out their hidden talents. Kit and the other students soon become gifted at music, painting, poetry, and math, but the gifts make them ill and draw them into a ghostly trap. The movie uses a slow, gloomy horror mood with a final fight for escape.
The film gives its main conflict a clear gender-power shape. Dead male artists use the girls as bodies for their work, while Duret tells the girls that powerful women should not be treated as broken or forced to follow others. Kit and Veronica reject the idea that their lives should serve male genius, and the girls unite against the school. This theme matters to the ending, but the movie presents it through supernatural horror and a growing-up story rather than a long modern political debate.

Woke representation / casting
Not present. The female cast fits the story because Blackwood is a school for girls. The film does not single out ethnicity or present its mixed cast as an identity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Madame Duret tells the girls that they do not need to be fixed. She warns that powerful women can be punished for being different. The scene gives the film a direct gender and empowerment message. The dialogue appears in one short scene and does not continue as a full political program.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
The story centers on girls whose minds and talents are taken over so dead men can finish their work. Kit and Veronica reject the order to become vessels, and the girls work together to escape. The ending treats control of the girls as a form of male power that must be destroyed. The film keeps this message inside a supernatural growing-up story.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Blackwood is shown as an institution that claims it can repair troubled girls while secretly using them. Madame Duret treats obedience and sacrifice as the price of greatness. The girls reject the idea that authority can define their worth or control their gifts. The film does not make a broad attack on capitalism, Christianity, or modern Western society.
27%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adds a fifth student and changes some plot details from Lois Duncan’s novel, but no race, gender, sexuality, or hero-role swap is clearly shown. The all-girl school and the girls’ central roles remain part of the story.
0%
