Jessie and Mark Hobson are a married couple living with deep pain after their young son dies in a drowning. They decide to foster Cody, an eight-year-old boy who has already lost his own mother. Cody can make his dreams appear in the real world while he sleeps, and his nightmares can turn into real monsters. The story stays inside their house, school, and foster-care world. The mood is soft and sad more than pure jump-scare horror.
The heart of the movie is grief and the ways adults and kids try to hold on to people they love. Jessie starts using Cody’s gift to bring back images of her dead son, and that choice hurts the whole family. Cody’s scariest dream figure is really a broken memory of his mother after cancer. The film is about love, fear, and learning to accept loss. Those personal feelings power the plot from start to finish.
