The Thinning follows Blake Redding, a Texas high school student whose father is the governor. In 2039, the United States uses a school aptitude test to cut the population, and students with the lowest scores are sentenced to death. Blake and Laina Michaels learn that the test is rigged after Laina is marked to die in his place. They race through a locked-down school to expose the scheme, giving the movie a tense young-adult thriller tone.
The film's main message attacks a government that treats test scores as a reason to decide who may live. It also shows political leaders using fear, school rankings, and claims about national success to defend the system. The story criticizes unfair privilege because Blake's powerful father changes the result for his son, while the smartest student is punished. These are broad dystopian ideas about power, testing, and corruption, not a story centered on race, sex, sexuality, DEI, or modern identity politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Thinning.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film has a female top student and a female teacher who help challenge the system, but it does not present those choices as a diversity message. The cast does not show a clear representation-first pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The governor gives a long speech defending the thinning as a way to make America smarter and more successful. He calls people who do not work or support society parasites and says they should be washed out. The film makes his law-and-order and competition message sound cruel. The dialogue does not discuss race, gender, sexuality, or DEI, so the woke signal stays mild.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Blake and Laina challenge a cruel test system, but they do not do so through race, gender, sexuality, or other identity politics. The story focuses on power, school pressure, privilege, and corruption.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film presents the United States as an authoritarian state that kills students through a test. The governor uses crime, rankings, competition, and national success to defend the system. Blake's family privilege exposes political corruption and unfair access. The critique is broad anti-authority satire, not a sustained attack based on race, sex, religion, or sexuality.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original dystopian story with no known source characters or real historical figures. It does not make identity-based changes to established material.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Other audience discussion focuses on quality, plot holes, Logan Paul's later controversies, and the film's dystopian premise.
0%
Creator track record context
Not present. The cached creator context shows no clear recurring DEI or identity-politics record. The main creators are linked mostly to comedy, horror, internet culture, and genre projects.
