Ten years after a lab blast kills millions around Chicago, sixteen-year-old Veronica “Ronnie” Calder still eats breakfast with the ghostly image of her dead father. The dead remain as “rems” that repeat old actions in the snowbound town of Jewel City. When a new rem writes “run” on her bathroom mirror, Ronnie joins the guarded new student Kirk to learn who is behind the warning. Their search leads them to a ruined lab, a string of deaths, and a killer hiding behind a trusted teacher. The film is a dark, cold teen mystery with ghost horror, danger, and a small romance.
Ronnie leads the investigation as a grieving teenager who follows clues, questions the adults around her, and escapes a trusted teacher who turns into the killer. The killer targets girls who share his dead daughter’s birthday because he wants to place her spirit in a living body. Brian and other ghosts move from frightening images to helpers who reveal guilt and protect Ronnie. Kirk helps Ronnie test each clue, but the story keeps her at the center of the search. The story stays focused on grief, trust, family loss, redemption, and the hard choice to let the dead go.
