This Netflix documentary looks at two deadly Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. It follows investigators, pilots, families of victims, and a dogged reporter as they dig into what went wrong. The film argues Boeing rushed a new plane and hid a risky flight system while chasing stock gains and beating a rival. The tone is serious, angry, and sad, more like a true-crime case than a tech how-to.
The main political push is about money and power, not race, gender, or queer identity. Viewers hear again and again that Wall Street thinking, cost cuts, and weak safety checks at Boeing and the FAA helped put unsafe planes in the sky. Families grieve on camera. Experts walk through the software that forced planes down. Some people will read that as a strong attack on big business and weak rules. Ordinary identity-politics lectures are not the engine of the story. A normal viewer notices corporate greed and broken oversight far more than any social-identity agenda.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Downfall: The Case Against Boeing.
Woke representation / casting
Real people appear because they lived the crashes or covered them (families, pilots, workers, experts). Diversity follows who was on those flights and in those jobs, not a clear identity-quota cast plan.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Speech centers on safety, software, profit, and weak rules. Some lines hit Wall Street and “public interest” politics. That is reform/anti-greed talk, not race, gender, or queer lectures.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
The spine is MCAS, crashes, cover-up, and money-first culture. Race, gender, or queer identity do not drive the plot or message.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Hard focus on Boeing’s shift to shareholder pressure, self-regulation, and a cozy FAA. Broader “big firms put money over people” framing shows up clearly. Not patriarchy or Christian-bashing; still a strong modern corporate/regulator critique.
45%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear wave of right-leaning claims that this film pushes DEI or identity politics. Anger and praise mostly target Boeing’s greed and the crashes.
0%
Creator track record context
Kennedy Rory Kennedy’s progressive social-doc history (cached mid-40s) is the main signal. Writers and most producers score low; the team reads as liberal reform nonfiction, not a pure identity-politics shop.
