Sylvester Stallone looks back on his life in this Netflix documentary. He grew up poor in New York with a hard, violent dad and found movies as a way out. The film follows how he fought to write and star in Rocky, then became a huge action star with Rambo and other hits. The tone is warm, personal, and a bit sad as he talks about fame, regrets, and packing up his old life.
This is mostly a career and family story about grit, rejection, and getting back up. Stallone talks about his childhood pain, how he built Rocky himself when studios said no, and what success cost him at home. Friends and co-stars add short comments. A normal viewer will notice an underdog sports-and-action legend story, not modern social-justice lectures or identity-politics plots.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Sly.
Woke representation / casting
Talking heads are mostly people from Stallone’s real career and family. One major critic is black and another co-star is Italian American by background, but the film is built around Stallone himself, not quota-style casting of fictional leads. Diversity is incidental, not the selling point.
4%
Woke political dialogue
Talk centers on childhood abuse, writing Rocky, body work, career wins and flops, and missing family time. Mentions of war pain tied to Rambo are story history, not modern identity or DEI speeches. Viewers hear personal and career talk, not activist slogans.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core themes are underdog drive, father wounds, rejection, and the price of fame. Italian American roots and working-class struggle are personal biography, not a campaign about race, gender, or queer identity. LGBTQ themes are not a visible story focus.
5%
Western institutional / cultural critique
He frames himself against closed studio doors and easy nepotism in classic outsider style. That is old-school Hollywood struggle, not a modern lecture on whiteness, patriarchy, or colonial guilt. Critics even noted the film mostly ducks big political fights.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Searches and coverage did not turn up a real audience fight claiming *Sly* pushes woke, DEI, or identity-politics propaganda. Complaints about other Stallone news or fake “anti-woke” rumors do not count against this film.
0%
Creator track record context
Key names on the project score very low in cached creator context. Zimny and most producers are craft- and entertainment-focused. Stallone’s public politics lean the other way from progressive identity activism. Bryan Gentry’s higher cultural-doc score is a mild background note, not the film’s main voice.
