Ron and Russell Mael are brothers from Los Angeles who formed the band Sparks. The documentary follows their music career from the late 1960s through more than five decades of albums and tours. The brothers face changing music fashions and weak sales while they keep making unusual songs. The tone is bright, funny, fast, and deeply admiring.
The film presents Sparks as outsiders who protect their own style instead of chasing a safer sound. A short section says the band had a large gay following and that its songs questioned masculinity. An interviewee says Ron’s old wedding-dress album cover is not Republican and not apple pie, while archive clips show playful clothes and sexual jokes. The film treats these details as part of Sparks’ art and humor. The larger story praises the brothers for keeping their creative freedom and working together for decades.

Woke political dialogue
The film includes a short discussion of Sparks’ gay following and an album cover that puts Ron in a wedding dress. One interviewee says the songs questioned masculinity and calls the image not Republican and not apple pie. The comments frame the band’s old shock value as a challenge to normal gender and political symbols. This material appears in one short section and is not the film’s main subject.

Identity-driven story themes
The film gives a short segment to Sparks’ large gay following, gender-playful images, and songs that question masculinity. The section presents the band as outsiders who unsettle ideas about how male performers should look and act. The film does not build a larger identity story around this point. The main story remains their music, creative freedom, and brotherly work.
