Naima is a struggling actor in Los Angeles who has just lost a film job. At a bar, she meets Sergio, a bold singer who wants to skip the slow parts of dating. The two women agree to stay together for 24 hours, have sex every hour, and tell each other the truth. Their fast experiment becomes tense, funny, and painful as Naima pulls back and Sergio pushes for more closeness.
Duck Butter makes a lesbian romance the center of its story instead of a side plot. Naima and Sergio speak openly about sex, desire, past hurt, and the pressure to be honest. The film presents the women as already open about desire, so the conflict comes from fear, neediness, and honesty rather than social punishment. It also questions normal dating rules by suggesting that constant intimacy can reveal the truth quickly, while the couple's failure shows that honesty cannot be forced.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Duck Butter.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives its two central roles to women in a lesbian romance. The choice makes queer identity part of the main cast and the main relationship, not a side detail. The film presents both women as active partners with control over the romance and sex scenes. The identity focus is strong, but the film does not build a wider representation-based group.
75%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film has no clear speeches or repeated lines about DEI, identity politics, or modern activist causes. Its talk stays focused on sex, honesty, fear, and broken relationships.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story is built around two women who begin a fast, intense sexual relationship. The film treats their queer desire as normal instead of making coming out or public hatred the main problem. The women try to replace ordinary dating with constant honesty and sex, so queer intimacy shapes nearly every scene. The plot still focuses on fear, neediness, and heartbreak, rather than becoming a political lesson.
88%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film treats normal dating as a dishonest performance that should be skipped. Naima and Sergio try to replace slow courtship with constant sex, total honesty, and a 24-hour test. This challenges familiar relationship rules, but the story also shows that their experiment becomes selfish, tiring, and damaging. It does not attack churches, families, capitalism, or other Western institutions.
27%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story and does not change a known character, source, or real person. The early draft changed Sergio from a man to a woman, but that happened before the film's story was established.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke complaints. Other reviews and audience comments criticized the pacing, sex scenes, or characters, but no clear anti-woke backlash was found.

Creator track record context
Cached context gives Alia Shawkat a 41/100 score for feminist, Palestinian, and other social statements. Cached context gives Miguel Arteta a 16/100 score and finds no clear activist pattern. The producers have mostly low cached scores, while Amey René has a 27/100 score tied partly to LGBTQ-centered projects. Interviews for this film use queer cinema, representation, and male-gaze language.
