Fair Play follows Emily and Luke, an engaged couple who secretly work at the same New York hedge fund. Emily gets the portfolio manager job that Luke expected, and their private life turns into a fight over work, money, sex, and control. The pressure grows through office rivalry, drinking, lies, and violence. The movie has a tense, dark tone and ends as a relationship thriller.
The story centers on gender power, male fragility, and the clash between a woman's career success and a man's need to feel in charge. Emily faces a male-heavy workplace where coworkers suggest that a woman could rise through sex, while Luke's jealousy grows into abuse and sexual violence. The film treats Luke's loss of status and his ideas about being a good man as the main danger. Emily's final stand gives the story a strong modern feminist message, even though both leads act badly.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Fair Play.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a white man and a white woman as its central couple in a present-day New York finance setting. The story does not frame the casting as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Emily asks why Luke cannot accept that she deserves the job. Luke says he never got his chance, while other workers suggest that Emily earned the promotion through sex or a diversity box. The couple argues about jealousy, threat, and who should lead. The film uses these talks to push a modern argument about gender power, but it has no long political speech.
32%
Identity-driven story themes
Emily's promotion creates the main conflict because Luke cannot accept a woman rising above him. The story links his anger to old ideas that men should lead, earn more, and control the relationship. Luke's jealousy grows into emotional abuse, sexual violence, and a demand that Emily comfort his wounded pride. Emily's final stand gives the story a clear modern feminist message, even though the film shows both partners as selfish and damaged.
74%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The hedge fund is shown as a male-heavy workplace where crude stories, sexual rumors, and status games shape careers. The film presents old male status rules as a force that damages both partners when Emily rises. The office and the relationship follow the same contest for control. The story also asks whether money, ambition, and love can work together, but it does not attack Christianity or Western culture as a whole.
61%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story with no established characters or real historical event to change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Small online accounts called the film woke, misandrist, feminist propaganda, or a revenge fantasy that humiliates men. Some complaints attacked Luke as a beta and objected to the feminist ending and the rape scene, which they called false. The supplied X search found no boycott, review-bombing drive, or large account support. The reaction was fringe and mixed, so it adds only a small backlash signal.

Creator track record context
Cached context scores writer-director Chloe Domont at 51/100 and producer Rian Johnson at 71/100. Domont's title interviews focus on gender power, male fragility, workplace inequality, and modern feminism. Johnson's record supports a wider representation context, but no producer-led identity message is clear in this title. The other cached crew records are mostly low or professional only.
