Sarah Quinn is a high school senior who lives with her mother and younger brother, Sonny, in Wardenclyffe, New York. Sonny and his friend Sam run a small junk business after school, and they find a locked book and a talking dummy in an abandoned house. The dummy, Slappy, comes alive and brings Halloween decorations and monsters into the town. The three young heroes must recover the book before Slappy turns the whole night into chaos. The film uses light scares, jokes, family trouble, and a playful Halloween mood.
Sarah is trying to finish a college essay about fear while dealing with a cheating boyfriend and a busy mother. She, Sonny, and Sam solve the crisis as a team, and each child gets a useful skill. Sonny uses his interest in science, while Sam shows courage and loyalty. The story says that fear can help people value their lives and that family and friends can face danger together. The ending gives Sarah a personal success when she learns that she has been accepted to Columbia University.
