Sam is a skilled hitwoman who works for a secret crime group called the Firm. After she refuses to let the group kill an eight-year-old girl, Sam becomes a target and must protect Emily. Sam also finds her missing mother, Scarlet, and three older assassins who once helped raise her. The story takes place in a bright but nameless city, and it mixes bloody action, dark jokes, and family drama.
Women control the heroic side of the story, and the film presents three generations of women as the people who solve the crisis. Sam, Scarlet, and the Librarians defeat many male killers, while the Firm is run by men and its boss speaks about not understanding his daughters. The film uses feminist language in a few jokes and presents female power, sisterhood, and women in traditionally male action roles as its main appeal. It also hints that Scarlet and Anna May were lovers, and it gives several women close, romantic-looking moments without stating the relationships openly.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Gunpowder Milkshake.
Woke representation / casting
The main heroes are five women, including Black, Asian, and white performers. The women lead the fights, control the secret weapon library, and drive the story. The marketing repeatedly presents the group as a female-fronted sisterhood of assassins. This makes the representation and gender focus easy to notice.
42%
Woke political dialogue
The script briefly uses the words “gender equality” and “feminist” during a joke about whether women can be targets. The main villain also says he has always considered himself a feminist before talking about his daughters. The film does not build a wider debate about politics or social policy.
16%
Identity-driven story themes
The film centers on three generations of women who fight together and form a chosen family. The story treats female power, sisterhood, and women in traditionally male action roles as its main appeal. Many male characters are cruel, foolish, or defeated by the women. The film also includes queer-coded relationships and a family outside the usual parent-and-child model.
62%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Firm is a male-run group that trains Sam as a weapon and treats people as tools. Sam rejects its orders after she protects a young girl, and the women then destroy its male-led power structure. The movie repeatedly places women in violent leadership roles and presents many male enemies as cruel or foolish. The story does not discuss real-world capitalism, patriarchy, or current politics.
38%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about Sam, Scarlet, and the Librarians. It does not change established characters, source material, or real historical figures.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some Metacritic users called the movie “woke garbage,” diversity-and-inclusion propaganda, or a film about female assassins and weak white men. Reddit users also called it “hardcore feminist” and criticized its “performative girl power.” Most public discussion focused on the weak script, John Wick comparisons, or the action, so the anti-woke reaction was real but limited.

Creator track record context
Navot Papushado has a cached score of 18/100 because his earlier Israeli genre films have been read as criticizing militarized masculinity and authoritarian politics. Ehud Lavski has a cached score of 0/100, with no known public activist pattern. Mary Vernieu has a cached score of 36/100 for public support of representation, while most other cached crew scores are low. This gives the title mild creator track record context.
