Halftime

The entire story is framed around identity. Lopez is shown fighting to prove herself as a Latina and a woman over 50. The film presents the NFL's decision to have her share the stage with Shakira as an insult. Her team claims that the league felt two Latina women were needed to do the job of one white artist. Her struggle is framed as a fight against systemic bias and a battle to use her art for social justice.

The film critiques several major American institutions. It targets the NFL for trying to censor her political message. It attacks the American government and border patrol for their immigration policies. It also critiques Hollywood and the major award shows for systemic bias because she was snubbed for an Oscar. Finally, it blames the media for sexist and unfair tabloid coverage of her early career.

The documentary faced clear backlash from viewers who disliked its political tone. Many people on social media and film forums complained that the movie was too woke. They argued that Lopez was virtue signaling and pushing left-wing propaganda. Viewers expressed frustration that a sports halftime show was used for political lectures. Some users felt she was playing the victim despite her extreme wealth.

The creative team has a mixed track record. Director Amanda Micheli has a history of focusing on feminist themes. High-scoring producers like Jennifer Sofio Hall and Bernardo Loyola have strong records of elevating social-justice and LGBTQ+ stories. However, several other producers on the team have no record of activism, which keeps the overall group score moderate.
