Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Heads of State.
Woke representation / casting
The movie uses modern, identity-conscious casting by putting a black actor in the role of the British Prime Minister and a South Asian actress as an elite super-spy. The female spy is portrayed as an unrealistic, bullet-dodging "girlboss" who can easily shake off punches from heavy male fighters. Meanwhile, the white male lead is portrayed as a goofy, incompetent comic relief character.
45%
Woke political dialogue
The script does not have heavy-handed activist speeches or modern identity politics words. However, it does include light political satire that mocks populism and celebrity-style politicians. The characters also use dialogue that defends globalist alliances and international treaties.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story does not focus on race, gender, or sexual identity struggles. It is mostly a standard buddy-action story about two world leaders. However, it relies on modern movie tropes where the diverse characters are highly capable while the traditional white male lead is clumsy and needs help.
25%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film critiques conservative populist politics. The American President is shown as a clueless former movie star who does not understand international alliances. The plot frames nationalist or isolationist viewpoints as dangerous or silly, showing that maintaining global organizations like NATO is the only way to save the world.
45%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie features an original story with entirely fictional, newly created characters, meaning no legacy characters or real historical figures were changed for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some conservative viewers and alternative review sites complained about the film's anti-MAGA slant and the unrealistic "girlboss" fight scenes. However, this backlash remained small and mostly confined to niche internet groups, as the general public treated the film as standard streaming filler.
20%
Creator track record context
Key creators have a low-to-moderate political track record. John Cena is a vocal progressive ally, and Sophie Holland prioritizes diversity in casting. However, directors Ilya Naishuller and Ben Davis, along with the screenwriters, have a clean history of making non-political, mainstream entertainment.
