Movie review
Hiccup is now the young chief of the Viking island of Berk. He tries to keep people and dragons living together in peace. A cruel hunter named Grimmel wants to trap Toothless, and Toothless falls for a rare Light Fury dragon. The tone is warm and funny, then turns sad and serious. The film ends with hard choices about home, love, and growing up as leaders.
The main story is about friendship, leadership, and saying goodbye. Gobber is shown as a gay mentor in short comedy beats when he flirts with Eret, but those moments are side jokes, not the heart of the plot. Hiccup and Astrid stay a normal couple who marry at the end. The dragons leave for a secret safe world so hunters cannot harm them. Viewers mainly get a family adventure with a soft message about protecting wild animals and accepting change.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Woke representation / casting
Gobber is shown flirting with Eret and clearly checking him out in short comedy moments. That is a small but real gay character beat in a family film. The Viking designs still fit a Norse-style fantasy world. Astrid is a strong fighter and partner, which fits the series, not a race-swap cast.
29%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No modern political speeches, activist language, or ideological debates. Dialogue stays focused on personal courage, leadership, and protecting friends.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Gobber’s attraction is a brief side joke, not a main arc. The core plot is friendship, leadership, romance between Hiccup and Astrid, and freeing dragons. The soft nature message is mild and not built as modern identity politics.
17%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present in this title.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original continuation of the franchise story with no ideological alterations to source material or historical elements.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Almost no specific anti-woke complaints targeted this film for pushing identity or DEI content. Most viewer discussion stayed non-political; any scattered comments appear fringe or confused with the later live-action remake.
0%
Creator track record context
Dean DeBlois has a mid-level record for subtle LGBTQ inclusion and stories about acceptance. Cressida Cowell has mild nature themes. Other listed producers score low. That fits light inclusion in this film, not a heavy activist pattern.
