Max is a nervous terrier who lives with Katie, her husband Chuck, and their young son Liam in New York. Max loves Liam, but he worries about every danger near the child. A trip to a family farm brings Max to Rooster, a tough farm dog who pushes him to face fear and give Liam more freedom. Gidget and Snowball follow separate rescue missions while the film uses quick jokes, slapstick action, and a warm family tone.
The film includes one brief gender-related joke when Molly dresses the male rabbit Snowball in a princess dress and makeup after using him as a superhero. Snowball calls the new look awesome, but the moment ends quickly and stays a small part of his superhero story. Gidget and Daisy also take brave action in their own rescue plots, while Max learns that love can become overprotective fear. The main story supports marriage, family, teamwork, courage, and accepting change.
