Kimi follows Angela Childs, a skilled tech worker who lives alone in a Seattle apartment. Angela has agoraphobia, a fear of leaving home, which became worse during the COVID-19 lockdown. She hears a recording that seems to capture a woman being attacked, but her employer tells her to leave it alone. Angela must cross the city, face her old trauma, and survive a company cover-up while the film shifts from a quiet mystery into a tense chase thriller.
The film centers a black woman as a capable tech worker and detective, and it gives her a black male prosecutor as a romantic partner. Its main case involves a woman who says she was raped, a past assault that shapes Angela's fears, and a short exchange about the MeToo movement. The story also shows protests about homeless safe zones and condemns Big Tech surveillance and corporate greed. These ideas support the crime plot and Angela's recovery, but they do not turn the movie into a broad identity-politics story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Kimi.
Woke representation / casting
The film places a black woman at the center as a highly capable tech worker and detective. It also gives her a black male prosecutor as the main romantic connection and includes a Romanian co-worker and a Colombian hitman. Present-day Seattle can support this mix, and the story never presents race as a political issue. No interview or marketing found sells the casting as a diversity goal, so the emphasis is mild.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Angela tells Darius that he cannot call her “Hotness,” and he jokes that MeToo is decades away in Romania. A news report names protests over homeless safe zones, and later protesters chant that they want homes instead of jails. Angela also says police put her on trial after her assault. These activist-style references appear in short scenes beside the main crime plot.
29%
Identity-driven story themes
Angela's past assault causes the fear of leaving home that controls her life. The new case centers on a woman who says the CEO raped her and is then killed to protect his company. The film shows Angela taking action when company leaders dismiss the report and treats the women's claims as serious. This focus on female victims and women seeking justice drives the mystery, but it remains part of a crime story instead of a broad identity campaign.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Amygdala treats a violent crime as a business problem because its stock market launch is near. The company uses private recordings, employee data, and tracking tools to find Angela. Its leaders repeat polite office language while hiding the crime and sending killers. The film criticizes Big Tech, privacy loss, and corporate power throughout the thriller, but it does not attack Western society or all business in a wider political speech.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Kimi is an original story, not an adaptation of established characters or historical events. No canon changes are present.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Reddit commenter called the manager's praise of Angela and the MeToo exchange corporate wokeism. Most audience posts focused on plot holes, pacing, and the tech premise instead of woke politics. Mainstream coverage found no large anti-woke campaign, so the complaints are isolated and weak.
8%
Creator track record context
Steven Soderbergh has a moderate stored score because he has expressed progressive views and made films with political or social ideas. Casting director Carmen Cuba has a lower stored score tied to efforts to include underrepresented performers. David Koepp and the other listed crew have low stored scores and no notable activist record. The film's themes fit Soderbergh's interest in technology and power, but crew history does not make the movie identity-driven by itself.
