Along the way, he trains a female fox named Zhen to take his place. This movie shows some girl-power elements, as a female successor quickly takes over the main hero role. Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Kung Fu Panda 4.
Woke representation / casting
The movie features prominent female casting for both the new hero, Zhen, and the main villain, the Chameleon. Many critics saw this as a forced effort to put female characters in charge of the franchise. It also places a heavy focus on Po's two dads co-parenting him. While they are not shown as romantic partners, this dynamic was heavily highlighted in marketing and the story. Some viewers felt this was used to normalize non-traditional, same-sex family structures.
45%
Woke political dialogue
The film does not have any direct political speeches or modern activist dialogue. The characters talk about change, growth, and passing on roles, but they do not use actual political buzzwords or real-world social justice terms.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story centers on Po stepping down to let a female thief inherit his hero title. Zhen's fast rise to power mirrors modern girl-power tropes where female characters quickly gain elite skills. The narrative also normalizes an alternative family setup with two fathers raising a son together.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
There is no critique of Western institutions or religion. However, the story softens traditional family dynamics by highlighting a two-fathers home. It also frames Po's desire to keep his hard-earned warrior title as an outdated norm he must abandon for progress.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
The movie completely sidelines the established Furious Five team, which fans found disappointing. It also alters the franchise's direction by forcing Po to give up his Dragon Warrior title very quickly so a brand-new female character can take over.
30%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Conservative viewers and family film critics expressed frustration online. They disliked the girlboss replacement of Po with a female successor who they felt did not earn the title. They also complained about the movie trying to please progressive audiences by emphasizing the two-fathers dynamic.
55%
Creator track record context
The main writers and directors have a history of making standard family films with no activist ties. One producer has a history with queer theater, but the overall crew's background remains very low-key with a focus on family entertainment.
