Connie marries Clifford, a rich English man, around the time of World War I. After he is badly hurt in the war, he can no longer be close with her in the way she needs. She feels lonely and stuck in his big country house. She falls for Oliver Mellors, the working-class gamekeeper on the land. The film is a soft, steamy period romance about desire, class, and leaving a cold marriage.
The clearest “woke-leaning” push is modern-style girl-power and body freedom. The story is built around Connie taking charge of her body, her pleasure, and her life, and rejecting a controlling husband and stuffy high-society rules. The director and many reviews frame it as a feminist tale about a woman owning her body, with sex scenes shot as her freedom, not as a dirty joke. Viewers also see class anger: Clifford grows mean and power-hungry, treats mine workers badly, and tries to keep Connie under his thumb. A normal viewer will notice the female-led desire and the “bad rich husband / kind working man” setup. Race swaps and queer plot lines are not the point of the movie itself.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Woke representation / casting
Main cast is mostly white and fits a 1920s English rich estate. No clear race or gender swap of famous characters. Lead Emma Corrin was a known queer/nonbinary star in the press, but plays Connie as a woman in a straight romance. That is a mild press-level identity signal, not heavy on-screen diversity casting.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Talk is period-style, not modern DEI slogans. Viewers still hear Clifford’s sexist and controlling lines, Connie pushing back, and disgust at how he treats workers. Class and marriage power show up in speech, so some political edge is easy to hear.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
The whole plot is Connie’s sexual and personal freedom: her body, her pleasure, leaving a cold marriage. Reviews and the director sell it as feminist and about body ownership. That gender-freedom theme is front and center. There is no central queer or race-identity plot in the story itself.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Clifford stands for cold rich power, bad treatment of workers, and a husband who traps and controls his wife. High society and old marriage rules look stifling. Class and “toxic rich man” beats are clear, though the film softens the book’s deeper mine-strike politics.
50%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Changes mainly cut or soften class detail, speed the romance, and give a cleaner happy ending. Those are ordinary adaptation choices, not identity-driven rewrites of race, gender, or queer identity.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No solid, widely reported wave of anti-woke or right-leaning attacks calling this Netflix film a DEI or identity-politics push. Talk was mostly about sex, chemistry, and fidelity to the novel.
0%
Creator track record context
The director’s high cached score (female gaze, sexual liberation) pulls the package up. Some producers and casting have mild-to-moderate inclusion or LGBTQ-linked credits. Other key names sit low. Overall mid-range creator context, not a pure activist crew.
