Long Shot is a political romantic comedy. Idealistic progressive journalist Fred Flarsky reunites with his former babysitter Charlotte Field. She is the U.S. Secretary of State and is preparing a run for the presidency. She hires him as a speechwriter, and they fall in love while she pushes a global environmental pact. They face a TV-star president and a Murdoch-like media mogul. The film ends with Charlotte as the first female president and Fred as First Mister after he takes her last name.
The story centers on a capable woman seeking the presidency against sexist double standards. Fred is a progressive idealist whose arc is to support her ambition and accept a subordinate public role. Dialogue makes progressive politics hard to miss, including anti-right journalism, sexist cable coverage of Charlotte, and putdowns of a Trump-like president and right-wing media. The happy ending flips traditional gender roles when the man takes her name. Conservative outlets called the film woke liberal messaging, while queer and faith themes stay off the main plot.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Long Shot.
Woke representation / casting
The film sets modern U.S. politics with a woman as Secretary of State and then first female president. Marketing and the ending treat that first as a landmark. Supporting roles fit a real D.C. and New York world rather than a forced checklist cast. The First Mister and last-name change ending shows flipped gender roles more than racial casting tricks.
38%
Woke political dialogue
Progressive talk is hard to miss on screen. Fred fights the right and big media and even goes undercover with neo-Nazis. Cable hosts ogle Charlotte while calling the gaze sexist. She names the trap that anger makes her hysterical, emotion makes her weak, and a raised voice makes her a bitch. Polls are framed lower because she is a woman, a mogul is mocked for linking storms to gay marriage, and the film constantly knocks a Trump-like president and right-wing media.

Identity-driven story themes
The core story is a skilled woman chasing the presidency against sexist double standards. The male lead is a progressive idealist whose growth is to back her goal and take a lesser public role. Coverage has called it feminist and a woke political rom-com. The green treaty matters less than the gender and power romance. There is no queer-centered plot.
64%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film mocks a dull TV-star president, Murdoch-style right media, and sexist political coverage. The happy ending flips old gender rules when the man takes her name and becomes First Mister. It plays more like liberal Democratic comedy than a deep attack on whiteness or colonial guilt. Still, digs at conservative power and gender norms are clear and intentional.
52%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original screenplay, not a rewrite of established characters, canon, or historical figures for identity reasons.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Right-leaning outlets pushed back in writing. The Washington Examiner cast Rogen as a woke boy and male feminist who hates Republicans and ends as First Mister with her name. Hollywood in Toto said the film strains to be as woke as possible and later listed it among 2019 woke box-office underperformers. The pushback was real but not a huge viral culture-war storm.

Creator track record context
Key names sit in a mid range that matches the film’s progressive gender and politics tone. Theron and Rogen score higher for outside feminist and political stances. Sterling fits Daily Show style liberal satire. Levine, Hannah, and most other producers and casting sit lower. Overall the crew context supports the film’s progressive tone without an all-activist team.
