Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Moana 2.
Woke representation / casting
The cast is fully diverse, focusing on Polynesian culture and representation. The new crew features Loto, a young female prodigy who serves as a brilliant builder and engineer. This fits the common trope of highly competent young female experts in modern media. However, the diverse casting aligns naturally with the Pacific Island setting. There is no visible identity signaling or forced quotas that feel out of place in this world.
25%
Woke political dialogue
The script contains no political talking points, activist statements, or modern identity lectures. The characters speak in ways that fit the fantasy historical setting.

Identity-driven story themes
The story focuses on reclaiming cultural heritage and bringing together separated indigenous communities. While these themes of cultural unity and ancestral connection are prominent, they are treated as traditional folklore rather than modern activist sermons. The central theme of female leadership is present through Moana, but it represents standard Disney girl-power rather than heavy-handed feminist theory.
25%
Western institutional / cultural critique
There is no critique of Western institutions, capitalism, or traditional values. The conflict is a simple fantasy struggle against an ancient god who wants to keep people divided. It does not critique modern social norms or Western culture.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Backlash was very low. Some anti-woke commentators and family-focused outlets scrutinized the film due to Disney's recent track record. However, conservative and family-centric review sites ultimately rated the movie as a safe and clean option for kids. It avoided the major backlash faced by other recent Disney releases.
15%
Creator track record context
The creative team has a mixed track record. Prominent writers and producers like Jared Bush, Jennifer Lee, and Yvett Merino have heavily supported Disney's recent diversity mandates and progressive storytelling goals. Conversely, producer Dwayne Johnson has openly criticized preachy political lessons in Hollywood films, advocating for universal storytelling instead.
