Mr. Nobody Against Putin is a documentary about a Russian schoolteacher named Pavel "Pasha" Talankin. When Russia invades Ukraine, Pasha secretly films his school being turned into a place for military recruitment and government propaganda. The film highlights Pasha's personal life as a gay man struggling under a highly conservative and anti-LGBTQ government. These personal identity elements appear in the background of his fight against the state's patriotic war lessons.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Mr. Nobody Against Putin.
Woke representation / casting
As a documentary, the film features real people rather than actors. The central figure, schoolteacher Pavel 'Pasha' Talankin, is gay, and the film touches on his loneliness and the pressure he feels living as a gay man under a repressive regime. Because this LGBTQ+ element is present in the background of his personal story, the score is elevated by 25 points.
32%
Woke political dialogue
The film does not feature modern Western activist jargon or systemic identity politics lectures. The dialogue and interviews focus on the immediate reality of state propaganda, the militarization of Russian children, and the teacher's personal struggle with complicity under a dictatorship. These themes represent a classic struggle against authoritarian tyranny rather than woke political discourse.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
The core narrative centers on a teacher's act of defiance against wartime propaganda and the grooming of children for war. However, Pavel's identity as a gay man and his alienation in a conservative, homophobic mining town form a noticeable background theme.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film's critique is aimed entirely at the Russian government, state schools, and the Kremlin's militaristic propaganda machine rather than Western cultural or religious institutions. While it shows traditional, highly patriotic Russian community values being exploited for war recruitment, this is treated as setting-appropriate exposure of authoritarian state control rather than an activist critique of Western norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original documentary following real-life events and people, so there are no changes to established characters, fictional canon, or adapted source material.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
While there is no major Western anti-woke backlash, the film faced severe backlash from conservative and state-aligned Russian media. Outlets and officials condemned the co-director for his sexuality, accusing him of spreading Western liberal values and LGBT 'extremism.' The Russian government subsequently banned the documentary and designated Talankin as a foreign agent.

Creator track record context
The creative team has a mild to moderate progressive track record. Co-director Pavel Talankin has spoken about his experiences navigating Russia's anti-LGBTQ laws. Producers Radovan Síbrt and Alžběta Karásková have produced queer-inclusive and identity-driven films, while Helle Faber has focused on feminist and post-colonial themes. Other team members focus strictly on anti-authoritarianism or science.
