In the late 1990s, older Marion and Tom take in sick Patrick. That brings up painful secrets from the 1950s. Young Tom is a policeman in Brighton who marries teacher Marion while also loving Patrick, a museum worker. Gay relationships are against the law then, so the three live with lies, fear, and hurt. The mood is sad and quiet, about love that had to stay hidden and years that got wasted.
The film is built around a gay love story and the harm of old laws that made that love a crime. A normal viewer will notice gay romance, sex between men, police raids, court pain, and shame around hiding who you are. Ads and interviews sold it as an LGBTQ history story about freedom and not going backward. The identity theme is the main point of the movie, not a side detail. Race-swap casting and modern slogan-style politics are not the focus. The story still puts queer identity and unfair treatment of gay people front and center from start to finish.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for My Policeman.
Woke representation / casting
Leads are a closeted policeman, his wife, and his male lover. The romance between the two men is the big casting draw. Promo stressed LGBTQ casting and queer history. Emma Corrin, who is queer-identified, plays Marion. This is not race-quota casting in a diverse modern office story; it is a mostly white 1950s British period film. Still, the gay leads and queer-focused sell are clear to viewers. Queer identity gets extra weight under the scoring rules.

Woke political dialogue
Characters talk about hiding love, whether marrying a woman is fair, police risk, shame, and illegal “indecency.” Lines fit the 1950s setting more than modern DEI slogans. Viewers still hear clear talk about gay life under unfair laws. Not a speech movie, but the legal and social talk is hard to miss.

Identity-driven story themes
The whole film is about gay love, the closet, a fake-straight marriage, and punishment under anti-gay law. Themes of wasted time, fear, desire, and late regret all hang on queer identity. Marketing called it an LGBTQ drama. Per scoring rules, a front-and-center queer project scores high even if other buckets are mid-range.

Western institutional / cultural critique
British law, police, courts, and “normal” marriage are shown crushing gay men and trapping everyone in lies. That is historical fact in the story world, not made-up. Creators also sold the film as a warning for today about freedom and not going back. That present-day rights framing raises this above plain period drama.
62%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. It adapts a novel with fictional leads loosely inspired by older real-life gossip, not a franchise race/gender swap or DEI rewrite of famous canon heroes.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few critics and commenters called it a “gay agenda” film or an attack on straight marriage and postwar British norms. Some right-leaning posts used “woke” language in reply to coverage. There was no huge, lasting anti-woke boycott. Most loud fights were about Styles’s casting or film quality, which do not count here.

Creator track record context
Cached key people for this review (Davis, the assistant directors, Levy) show little public activist or identity-politics campaigning, with stored scores near zero to low teens. Title interviews from other creatives frame LGBTQ history and rights, which fits the movie’s subject, but the cached crew track record stays mild.
