Addie Moore is a widow, and Louis Waters is a widower who lives next door. The two older neighbors have barely spoken for years in their small Colorado town. Addie asks Louis to spend nights in her bed so they can face loneliness together. Their quiet friendship becomes love while town gossip, old grief, family trouble, and Louis's past affair put pressure on them. The film has a gentle, sad, and hopeful tone, with quiet talks and simple daily moments carrying the story.
The film says older people can still want love, sex, and close company. Addie makes the first move, speaks openly about loneliness, and resists the town and her son's wish to control the relationship. The film treats this challenge to age and gender expectations as personal courage, not as a modern political campaign. The story also follows grief and family duty, and it shows how forgiveness can hurt when love and family pull in opposite directions.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Our Souls at Night.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film casts older white Americans in a small Colorado town, matching the story world. No identity-first or diversity-first casting pattern appears in the title.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss loneliness, grief, sex, family, gossip, and past mistakes. The film does not use modern DEI, activist, or identity-politics lines.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Addie makes the first move and asks Louis to share her bed for company. The couple shows that older people can still seek love and sex. The town and Gene treat the relationship as improper, so the story pushes back against age and gender expectations. The film keeps this message inside a personal romance instead of making it a broad activist campaign.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The town gossip and Gene's pressure are personal story conflicts. The film does not frame them as a modern activist attack on family, religion, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film keeps the novel's older widow and widower at the center. No identity-related change to an established character or real person is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The reviewed coverage shows ordinary praise, plot discussion, and complaints about pace or the ending. No clear anti-woke complaint about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging was found, and the supplied X pass found none.
0%
Creator track record context
Ritesh Batra has a mild record of stories about class, women, and social limits, but no strong activist persona. Robert Redford brings a mild record of environmental and native American advocacy. Erin Simms has a modest focus on women over 60, while the writers, other producers, and Kent Haruf have little identity-driven record. This context supports a low score, and the film itself does not turn those signals into a campaign.
