Piercing follows Reed, a new father who leaves his wife and baby and rents a hotel room in another city. He plans to hire a sex worker and kill her with an ice pick so he can control a violent urge. Jackie arrives instead of his first choice, and her self-harm, drug use, and strange behavior break his careful plan. The film shifts from a murder setup to a tense game in which each person tries to control the other, with dark jokes, sex, blood, and dreamlike horror.
Jackie is a woman who refuses to stay a helpless victim, and the story repeatedly flips the power between her and Reed. Reed treats the woman he hires as a target, but Jackie turns his plan back on him and becomes the stronger threat at several points. The film also shows a sex worker as a person with her own desires, plans, and violent choices instead of as a simple victim. These gender and sex-work ideas shape the main conflict, while the film tells them through a strange romance, injury horror, and black comedy.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Piercing.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main couple is played by white actors, and the smaller cast does not form a diversity-focused pattern. The film does not frame a casting choice as a representation or empowerment statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about murder, sex, fear, and control. The film does not use modern identity, DEI, or activist lines.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film centers on a man who wants to kill a female sex worker and then loses control when she acts on her own desires. The story repeatedly flips who is dominant and who is helpless during their sexual and violent game. Jackie breaks the usual simple victim role and takes control of Reed at several points. The film makes gender and sexual power visible, but it presents the idea through horror and black comedy rather than an activist message.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Reed lies to his wife and treats the sex worker he hires as an object in a private murder plan. The story makes his male entitlement and violent fantasies look sick and foolish when Jackie reverses the power. The film does not connect his behavior to a wider attack on patriarchy, family, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions. Its critique stays inside one strange relationship.
15%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes names and setting details from the Japanese novel for an English-language adaptation. No race, gender, sexuality, or hero-role change is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The film drew comments about its gore, style, and strange romance, not about woke or political content. The supplied X pass also found no anti-woke complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
Nicolas Pesce has a supplied creator score of 6/100 and a horror-focused record. Ryū Murakami has a supplied score of 5/100 and writes about violence, sex, isolation, and social breakdown rather than DEI or identity politics. The listed producers have low to modest supplied scores and no sustained activist record. Pesce’s interviews frame this film as a dark genre exercise, with one narrow effort to avoid a damaged sex-worker stereotype.
