Twenty-six years after the first attacks, Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray face a new Ghostface killer while their kids and friends get pulled in too. The movie is a loud spoof of modern horror hits, reboots, and franchise tricks. The tone is crude, fast, and full of cheap gags. The main fight is about who owns the “Scary Movie” story as the old team and the new teens clash.
On screen, queer identity shows up in clear ways. Brenda’s child Dei is nonbinary, and the sheriff’s son Jess is transgender, with a father-son story about acceptance. Ray still runs long jokes about being in the closet. At the same time, the film mocks pronoun rules, cancel culture, and “woke” labels in big set pieces. Those identity beats are easy to notice, but the plot is still mostly a messy horror comedy, not a pure message movie.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Scary Movie.
Woke representation / casting
The next-gen group includes Dei Meeks, a nonbinary teen, and Jess, a transgender son of the sheriff. Those roles are named, spoken about, and easy to see. Marlon said he wrote Jess to be inclusive. The Core Four are returning stars from the old films, not a brand-new identity cast, but the queer youth roles still stand out.
48%
Woke political dialogue
Some lines treat inclusion as good, and Cindy is joked about as a Republican recluse who is “supposed to be racist.” Much more of the talk mocks pronouns, cancel culture, and “woke” labels. Progressive speech is light, not the main joke engine.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Jess has a father-son acceptance story Marlon linked to his own family. Dei’s nonbinary identity and a pronoun fight on the train are plot moments. Ray’s closet-gay bits keep running. Queer identity is clear on screen even while other gags roast modern politics.
52%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Faris and the script use Cindy as a MAGA-style shut-in for laughs and “hold up a mirror” jabs. There are light culture-war digs. The movie more often mocks cancel culture than it paints churches, family, or the West as the main villain.

Woke character or canon changes

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few online posts call the film woke or anti-white. That complaint thread is small and not the main news story. Louder anger was about the pronoun jokes being anti-woke, which does not count for this score.
12%
Creator track record context
Marlon sits in the mid-20s as an LGBTQ ally who put a personal trans story into the script while still selling equal-opportunity offense. Most other Wayans writers and director Tiddes score near zero on activist records. Producer Glickman has mild diversity-hiring advocacy. The team overall is comedy-first, not a hard DEI slate.
