Suitable Flesh follows Elizabeth Derby, a respected psychiatrist whose life breaks apart after she meets Asa Waite, a young patient who says his father can take over his body. Elizabeth thinks Asa has a mental illness, but a secret spell links his family to an ancient creature that jumps from body to body. The danger spreads through her home, her marriage, her medical work, and a psychiatric hospital in New England. The movie mixes bloody horror, dark jokes, mystery, and strong sexual scenes.
Elizabeth's desire is a major part of the story, and the movie places a woman at the center of sexual danger, supernatural power, and violent choices. The creature moves through male and female bodies and says it may have been born a woman. The story reverses the usual husband and wife roles and ends with the line that the future is female. These choices make gender, sexual freedom, and changing identity clear themes, even though the movie remains an over-the-top body-swap horror film rather than a political drama.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Suitable Flesh.
Woke representation / casting
Elizabeth and Daniella are the main doctors, while Edward is the worried spouse who is pushed into a role often given to a wife. Joe Lynch says he changed the story’s main characters to women and wanted a female-gaze version of the erotic thriller. The film has no broad race or diversity casting plan. The identity signal is clear but limited.
40%
Woke political dialogue
The entity says it may have been born a woman after assuming it was born a man. The entity also says, “The future is female,” during a late confrontation. The film includes a few other lines about changing bodies and sexual desire. These ideas appear in one important scene instead of throughout the movie.
40%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes changing bodies and changing sex roles part of its main horror story. The entity moves between male and female bodies and questions its own sex. Elizabeth’s sexual desire drives the curse, and women lead the story’s danger and choices. Gender and sexuality are central themes rather than side details.
74%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film reverses a familiar marriage setup by making Elizabeth the sexual pursuer and Edward the worried spouse. The entity says, “The future is female,” after enjoying life in a woman’s body. The story does not attack churches, capitalism, or Western institutions. The gender message stays inside the supernatural plot.
20%
Woke character or canon changes
The film adapts H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Thing on the Doorstep.” The source uses male lead characters, but the film makes Elizabeth Derby the main psychiatrist and changes other key roles to women. The new version builds much of its sexual and body-swap story around that choice. This is a major identity change.
70%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Online reactions mainly criticize the plot, acting, tone, sex scenes, or effects. No clear anti-woke boycott, review bomb, or culture-war fight was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Joe Lynch and Dennis Paoli have no strong record of DEI activism. Barbara Crampton has often spoken about better roles for older women and helped make female agency important in her projects. Samuel Zimmerman has worked on race and queer horror history programs. Brian Yuzna has used class and anti-establishment ideas, but his work is not mainly identity politics.
