Team Darryl follows Darryl Jacobson, a regular Australian worker who has moved to Los Angeles. Thor has left him, and Darryl needs a roommate so he can keep paying the rent. The only person who answers is the Grandmaster, an alien ruler who has lost his world and now wants to run Earth. The six-minute short uses mock interviews, dry jokes, and strange roommate problems to make the Grandmaster’s threats feel silly.
The clearest identity-related moment comes when the Grandmaster tells Darryl that he loves him and pressures Darryl to say it back. The exchange creates a brief queer-coded, same-sex romantic joke, but Darryl treats it as an awkward threat rather than a serious romance. The story spends most of its time on rent, online attention, dangerous power, and the trouble of living with a strange roommate. The final tone stays silly and uneasy as Darryl wonders whether the Grandmaster wants to spend time with him or melt him.

Identity-driven story themes
Grandmaster tells Darryl that he loves him and pressures Darryl to repeat it. The exchange gives the scene a brief same-sex romantic meaning. The joke makes the moment awkward and threatening instead of showing a serious queer relationship. The rest of the story follows rent, online fame, and the Grandmaster’s violent plan.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The Grandmaster wants to rule Earth, but the short treats this as a silly alien threat. It does not attack Christianity, family life, traditional gender roles, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The short changes the Grandmaster’s situation after Thor: Ragnarok, but it does not change his race, gender, sexuality, or hero role. Darryl is an original supporting character.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke complaints. Reddit and audience reviews discuss humor, canon status, and Jeff Goldblum rather than woke or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Taika Waititi has the strongest woke and activist record in the creator notes, including support for minority stories and more Indigenous voices. Kevin Feige and Victoria Alonso have backed diversity and LGBTQ representation across Marvel. Roy Thomas, Sal Buscema, and several other producers have little public activist record in the supplied context. This creates a moderate context signal, but the short itself does not use that context to push a social message.
