That's Amor follows Sofia, a graphic designer in San Francisco who loses her job, catches her boyfriend cheating, and breaks her ankle in one terrible day. She returns to her mother's home in Sonoma and tries to recover from the pain and shame. Her mother pushes her into a couples cooking class at a Spanish restaurant, where Sofia meets Matias, a chef from Barcelona. The light romantic comedy follows their quick attraction, Sofia's struggle with her ex, and her choice to build a new life.
The film gives Sofia a small healing story as she stops letting her ex and her old job decide her future. She applies for a master's degree in Madrid and chooses a path that belongs to her. The cooking class also includes David and Todd, a married gay couple whose relationship is shown as happy and ordinary. Their scenes add visible LGBTQ representation, but the main story stays focused on straight romance, family support, food, and starting over.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for That's Amor.
Woke representation / casting
The movie uses Latino actors for Spanish characters from Barcelona, and reviewers noticed the accent and national mismatch. The central love interest makes this choice easy to notice. The cooking class also includes an older married gay couple in recurring supporting scenes. The California setting makes a mixed group believable, but the Spanish casting choice adds a clear identity-based casting signal.
36%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Sofia talks about choosing her own future, but the film does not use identity, DEI, or activist language. The dialogue stays focused on romance, work, family, and cooking.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Sofia's story repeatedly asks her to choose her own career and relationship. The film also gives a supporting gay married couple a happy and ordinary place in the cooking class. The couple adds visible LGBTQ representation, but it does not drive the main plot. The story remains mainly a standard romance about healing and starting over.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a bad boss, an unfaithful boyfriend, and a pushy mother as personal problems. It does not attack men, families, religion, or Western institutions through modern activist ideas.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original modern romance with no established characters, historical people, or source story that it changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X check found no anti-woke reaction, and wider searches found no clear title-specific claims about DEI or identity politics. Negative reviews focus on clichés, chemistry, and Spanish accents instead.

Creator track record context
Shaun Paul Piccinino has a broad commercial record in romances, holiday films, action films, and television. John Ducey mainly writes accessible romance, family, sports, and seasonal stories, with occasional diverse characters.
