The Dive follows sisters May and Drew on a scuba trip to a remote coast in Malta. A rockslide hits the water, and a boulder pins May about 28 meters below the surface. Drew reaches the top, but she has only a short time to find air tanks, a car jack, and help before May runs out of air. The movie stays tense and bleak as the sisters fight cold water, bad gear, deep water, and their own panic.
The sisters also carry old anger from a troubled family past. Flashbacks show their father treating them harshly, while the present-day trip shows how far apart the sisters have become. Drew acts fast and takes repeated risks, while May uses her diving skill to guide her from under the rock. The story treats their rescue as a test of loyalty, guilt, trust, and the choice to keep fighting when survival may be impossible.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Dive.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The two main characters are sisters played by Louisa Krause and Sophie Lowe. The film does not frame their female leads as a diversity or identity campaign, and the setting does not create a clear casting mismatch.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with diving, family strain, fear, and rescue. It does not make a political or activist argument.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story centers on a sister trying to save her sibling from drowning. The family trauma and loyalty themes do not turn into a message about race, gender, sexuality, or modern identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The father appears in painful memories, but the film does not build a wider attack on men, family life, religion, or Western culture. The conflict stays personal and tied to the sisters’ past.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is a remake of Breaking Surface, but no known character is changed for an identity message. No historical figure or real event is rewritten.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public complaints focus on pacing, diving realism, plot holes, and the ending. No clear claims that the film pushes woke, DEI, or identity politics appeared in the reviewed coverage.

Creator track record context
The cached creator notes give the writers scores of 0 and 5. The notes give the casting director and producers low scores from 0 to 13. Céline Dornier has credits that touch race, gender, and sexuality, but no title-specific activist message is documented. This gives the title only a weak creator track record signal.
